Welcome
The Mamu are an Indigenous Australian people from the coastal and rainforest region of Far North Queensland. Mamu country extends from Maria Creek in the south to Coopers Point in the north and inland to Tarzali.
During 2010, the Mamu Aboriginal Corporation was successful in securing some resourcing for the development of a comprehensive website as a principal tool for the body's capability and capacity to fulfil our legislative responsibilities under the Queensland Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003.
The Mamu - People, Country and Culture website is for sharing our culture, knowledge and aspirations amongst our Mamu community living anywhere in the country.
The website is also for promoting knowledge about us within the wider community, and especially for supporting our inclusion in all decision making relating to or impacting Mamu people, culture and country.
The website also provides principal means to database, as a Cultural Heritage Information Management System (CHIMS)
- all existing Mamu cultural information at hand including records developed through Cultural Heritage Mapping training Mamu people started in 2008 with the Aboriginal Rainforest Council;
- information retrieved systematically from other sources including museums and collecting institutions and government agencies; and
- extending this information with recordings from each of the Mamu family groups across the 5 Clans and further Cultural Heritage Mapping information.
The web-based CHIMS software approach supports Mamu capacity to:
- Record a wide variety of cultural heritage using different media
- Map Traditional Owners for family country (including genealogies and histories), sites, tracks and specific areas
- Manage areas according to local custom (lore), and with respect to law
- Monitor to account for changes in heritage over time, and
- Preserve heritage for future generations.
